This Is Your Life

I’ve been employed of late

A writing commission

Welcome pennies it is true

But more than that – a passion

The sense of being useful

Contribution to the world

We all need good employment

We all need to be heard

My father hit the doldrums

When ill health did for him

He had lost his sense of meaning

At home did not suit him

His strength had gone

But smaller jobs eventually came his way

And he worked until his doctor said

Michael call it a day

Then glorious retirement

In his bungalow

Mammy’s food to nurture him

Racing on Channel Four

Looking out the window

Looking back on life

The long and winding road

You know, I’ve done all right
