Tennis like boxing
Is blow versus blow
Every punch and strike
Seeks to lay you low
Intense confrontation
Emotional to and fro
Skilful yes I grant you
But not one I want to know
Give me football any day
And yes athletics to
Running and jumping and scoring goals
Involving many too
That singular personal intense set to
Goes against my grain
Orchestral manoeuvres on a park
A communal refrain
Wimbledon ladies’ final
I cannot bear to watch
Wanting Jabeur to win it
But she may have met her match
So here I sit a-writing
A football man at heart
Waiting for the season
To return again to start
