Touching Distance

I wrote to my mother every week

Away at school on my own

Sunday morning

Write a letter home

It was my lifeline

How I kept in touch

With those I loved

Loved so very much

In later years

The telephone

Voices in my ear

Keeping close to loved ones

Those that we hold dear

In the end a phone call

Made in dead of night

Told me that mum had gone

Couldn’t believe it quite

Now a face upon a screen

From her care home bed

Calls my soul to journey on

On where she has led

My mother lived a prayerful life

From childhood days till death

That is my example now

Until my parting breath
