New Year

We start the year with winter colds

Pandemic makes us cower

And Scots went down to England

Hogmanay round Blackpool Tower

And New Year brings a load of gongs

To worthies left and right

Honi soit qui mal y pense

Order of Garter knight

And over in America

A guilty verdict met

With hints of further stuff enough

To cause a prince to sweat

Honours or shame the fashion now

Not much in between

Where life pours ordinary plenty

Now that’s a better scene

A pint of ordinary plenty

Can see us through the day

The joy in every simple thing

A child again at play

+ Thanks to Patrick Kavanagh and his poem ‘Advent’ for helping us to see the joy in simple things.
