I have never driven for so long
Into a setting sun
Driving down from Belfast to the west
Heading down to FIvemiletown
Overnight stay there
The road ablaze in crimson light
Creation’s closing prayer
The road due west and arrow-like
The sun refused to move
Straight in my eyes the whole long way
This the final groove
Flap turned down against the glare
The yellow light still shone
Like my mother’s long life ending
She’s gone, Brian son, she’s gone
Never before never since
A light so strong and sure
Standing steady in its station
Endure the light endure
My mother’s life endured with mine
In joy and silent tears
And I am driving to the west
And calling back the years
