‘Thinking is the cause of man’s greatness’

A quotation from Pascal

On a card my mother gave to me

Together with a bible

The day I was ordained

 

It took me by surprise

I thought ‘praying’ perhaps

Might be suggested

But no – ‘thinking’ it was

And I am grateful for it

 

It is a great power that we have

Our ability to think

And the more we think

The more we might come to see

The truth of things

Even the feel of things

And how life ought to be

 

And thinking in company

I guess we call that praying

When calling on the Lord

We think and ask to see

 

And then our conversation

Enriched by quiet thought

Becomes a source of pleasure

And we’re living as we ought
