He could have called him out

As a traitor and a thief

But what would that have done?

Only added to the grief

Instead he called him by his name

Encouraged him to be

And Zacchaeus in his amazement

Came hurrying from the tree

 

And despite the general murmuring

And disapproving tones

Zacchaeus gave of his riches

And for injustice he atoned

All he needed was the spark

The spark that sets us free

And the welcome given by Jesus

Is enough for you and me

 

In all our difficult dealings

We have it in our power

To maintain an open spirit

That sends deceit to cower

And in the world of politics

It is vital for our state

That we deal with one another

And yes negotiate
