I have never waved a Union Jack
I am not that way inclined
I have never worn the poppy
In November time
I have an Irish flag at home
Inherited somehow
A quiet family token
Not some raging vow
I have a Bolton Wanderers scarf
Have worn it to keep me warm
Pride in the local football team
It doesn’t do any harm
But lots of flags and bunting
Can seem over the top
An over bold loud statement
Might have to call a cop
The poppy for remembrance
Is fine no argument
But other folk can use it
To bolster war’s intent
My father lived the quiet life
And he a soldier too
He’d rather sit and have a pint
Than an argument with you
