30 Degrees In The Shade

The sun was shining

But it’s a cold October day

That fence needs painting

I’ll look the other way

But the sun insisted

Poke your nose outside

My word it’s warm this afternoon

I can hear my dad’s surprise

So out I went

Sun was on my back

30 degrees in the shade

When my dad was in Iraq

So I got on with the painting

My body all aglow

Red Cedar on the fence posts

I’m doing well you know

All we need is encouragement

That pat upon the back

The kindly word of praise

Appreciation like

Things might not look rosy

On an October afternoon

But the sun is warm and welcoming

I think I’ll be back soon
