Sixty years ago this May
Nanna Carey died
My mother’s mother
Matriarch
I remember her with pride
White marble slab
Black lettering
Records her life gone by
Never to be forgotten
A Dhia Dean Trocaire
A life lived out in Erris
By Doolough’s western strand
Glencullen all her married life
A family to command
And widowed more than forty years
I remember her in black
Keep going she would say to me
There is no going back
Out from her life
Her children went
Out to foreign shores
And children’s children
Found their way
Right back to Nanna’s door
A powerhouse of a family
All claim this woman’s name
She made us what we are today
And that can be her fame
