Silent Witnesses

English village churches

Dot the landscape

Hushed and quiet

Standing peaceful still

Around their walls

A carpet of green sward

Gravestones oddly angled

A gathered congregation

Reminding us of journey’s end

God’s will

An age of faith maybe

Yet troubled times

They had their doubts

Their challenges

Just as we have ours

Their quiet assembly

Reminds us of our duty

To love one another

Be wary of the powers

Do not fear death

I think they say to us

Do not ignore it either

Be prepared

Each night the prayer of compline

Completes the living day

Entrust your soul to God

Amen we say
