Today is a day for quietness
Stillness in my heart
Looking at a precious photograph
Like soldiers ever marching
While solemn music plays
Passing by a silent Cenotaph
Remembering lost comrades
Buried far away
Lying quiet in a foreign field
I remember Margaret
Comrade of my days
The lovely lass who taught my heart to yield
She believed life is for living
Every single day
She knew the battle from the very start
In childhood days and adult years
Her patience and her quiet tears
She faced the day
She always played her part
And so I stand in silence
Remembering the girl
Who walked with me along that Tayside strand
I do believe in heaven’s door
We’ll walk again another shore
Margaret and I and hand in hand
