What did I do today?
I rose at eight
Slightly sluggish
Hence my starting late
Orange juice nutty granola tea
Usual ablutions
Then to poetry
Wrote about the Bismarck
Great old story
Lutjens and Lindemann
Out for fame and glory
Then to catch my bus
And Waitrose shop
Warm day today
So salad top of my list
And Vin Francais
Keeps me happy
A glass or two I’d say
Bus home
Soda bread and tea
Was going to potter in garden
But too warm you see
And some days it’s too cold
You get the picture
Brian is slowing down
Don’t want a lecture
A siesta sleep
Recliner chair all ready
Taking afternoons slow and steady
But wanting to be writing
It is so satisfying
And so a poem
What did I do today?
I have noticed
It is easy to be selfish
I only have myself to think about
All this time is mine
Days roll onto days
Such luxury
Never known before
My grandsons break this habit
They come take over
Inhabit
I bow to them
I try to do their bidding
Walks to see the ‘choo choo’ trains
Though ‘choo choo’ is no more
On to swings and playing in the park
And chocolate buttons I have ready
They find them I’m not kidding
And playing on their daddy’s bed
And hiding in the dark
A full time job is children
I have come to see that now
Up close and personal
Hard work
My job to be a buffer zone
If only a little break
The reward for granddad
I cannot begin to speak
