The Kiss

Ather-Leigh Woods
Nature walk from school
Young children walk in twos
A snaking line
I remember tall trees
Looming
Friendly all communing
And leaves of russet gold
Upon the ground

It felt so friendly
Walls of wood around
Gentle breezes
Fluttering leaves on trees
A carpet at your feet
A welcome mat to greet
The wondering wandering children
In this den

Suddenly from out the line
A girl comes running up
To me and kisses me on the cheek
Eileen Alldred was her name
First kiss ever planted
Ran back into line
The dare was done

Funny the things remembered
The things that mean so much
A childish dare
A kiss has me enchanted
Too long a time would follow
Before kisses came again
Never mind
The idea had been planted
