A Taxing Question

Mark 12:13-17 ~ The Gospel in Verse

Chiefs and elders
Back in the fray
Living to fight another day
Send representatives to the fight
They’ll catch him out
As day follows night

First an introductory spiel
How good you are
You do not reel
Before mighty personages
Ranking figures
You teach good doctrine
No one sniggers
So tell us please
It’s an easy question
Should we pay tax?
To Caesar’s minions
You’re asked to answer yes or no
That’s how we frame
The trap just so

Seeing their glaring
Cruel deception
Jesus easily
Side steps the question
Show me a coin
Point out the image
And I’ll point out
Where lies true homage
Give to Caesar what is his
And give to God your very lives

Those who come with double-dealing
Leave the scene with conscience squealing
Those who set out to deceive
Will leave the stage and surely grieve
Deceivers don’t hold all the aces
The Lord quite simply reads our faces
