We are all good at something
I told him
When Walter kindly praised me
For my writings
It is nice to be regarded
Best way of being rewarded
And I was grateful
For those words inviting
Now Walter is a character
That’s the best way to put it
If pressed for a description
Where to start!
You really have to meet him
Come close enough to greet him
And then you’ll see
The feelings of the heart
I’ve known him forty years
And more
At first in London town
And then in Arklow
Where he settled down
I have visited and it lingers
Drank Guinness there
And vino
And floury potatoes
Breaking in your fingers
So Walter praised my poetry
-Well we are all good at something
– I don’t know what I’m good at, he replied
– You don’t know what you’re good at?
– Well, everybody else does!
You’re a character, Walter
In everybody’s eyes
