Cross Purpose

This bloke at a dinner
Was going on and on
About positivity and life plan
And five year down the line
Everyone was listening
The bloke was so enthused
He clearly loved his theory
That was plain

I got up from the table
And headed for the loo
Just to get away
To have a break
I can’t stand too much positive
I can’t be doing with it
Enough to drive me mad
Gives me headache

I remember dear old John
A good friend of mine
Reflecting on Easter 1980
A Liverpool church gathering
Upbeat as they come
‘We’re an Easter people
And alleluia is our song’

Just to get the balance right
Our John put in his pennorth
All this ‘glory glory’
Not for him
‘There’s a dark side
And there’s trouble
Let Easter be itself
I’m more a Good Friday man
Myself’

We have to factor in the cross
There is no way around it
Sorrow comes to everyone you see
I’m all for helping life along
It is a mystery
But don’t forget how suffering sets us free
