St Andrews

My grandson, Noah, called me on the phone
He’s only two, a video call we had
He’s off on holiday next week
Sea and sand to seek
St Andrews a caravan, can’t be bad

I first was there in 1973
Chris and I young priests out on a spree
Permission to take the car
We weren’t driving far
Ended up right there on the first tee

Another time I came was with your mum
1991 I told my son
She and I were courting
Though a future was uncertain
We loved it there really had some fun

Now my grandsons take that very floor
Where I first came 48 years and more
Those chariots of fire
Who ran the sands entire
Will echo round their peaceful cabin door

God bless my grandsons on their holiday
God bless their grandma though she ‘s gone away
God bless dear Chris companion
In those days freedom’s champion
And bless me too O Lord and son always
