Foundations

I met a girl in an orphanage
She was coming up sixteen
Soon she’d leave a life outside to start
I met her some years later
Children round her knee
‘Had no family these children now my heart’

When I had a breakdown
Desperate brought down low
I asked of Clare a question of the heart
Will I ever again be happy?
You’ll be happy very soon
How do you know that?
Because you have the start

The happiness of childhood
Is foundation fit for life
Rock solid, like the house that Jesus said
Unhappy childhood misery
Leads on to troubled times
Until a new foundation floor is laid

The storms of life they come to all
No one goes scot-free
Sorrows come and pain and misery
But love in childhood holds the door
No enemy will take the floor
The love we have remains eternally
