How It’s Done

Avert your eyes
Don’t see what’s there to see
We’re making money
Out of slavery
My register of accounts
Is telling me
How rich we are
We’ll build a mansion, see

There is another cost
I do not see
The collars, cuffs and chains
Of slavery
The reason is
I never visit there
Where Caribbean
Creatures are my care
And anyway
They are not
The same as us
Lesser humans really
What’s the fuss?

This is how
We get away with it
Push the issue
Far away from us
And if up close then
Make them lesser folk
Treating them the same
Now that’s a joke

Remember that country
‘Far away’
A place of which we know little
So they say
1938
We are not aware
Let Hitler march on in
It’s not our care

Then the damned
Atrocities began
The Jews and gypsies
Reassessed defined
Lesser humans
Untermenschen say
Arrested ghettoised
Brutalised
Away

This is how
We do the things we do
Let distance do
The ugly work for you
Then demonise and minimise
The problem goes away
And we build mansions
Would you like to stay?
