John 21:15-19
Mammy liked to quote the words
Spoken once to Peter
Some day another one will come
And tie you and take you
Where you would not go
Looking at the days of setting sun
I guess she knew her own life
Would turn out to be long
She was so strong and healthy in her day
A broken hip and a fall
An operation too
Two years in nursing care she lay
Yielding now to others
Things we cannot do
Patient is the only way to be
I’m heading that direction
Though only seventy-four
Glad and able to put the socks on me
I listen to my mother now
Some other words she said
‘Each stage of life prepares you for the next’
She lived her life with energy
Till energy there was none
She found it hard but never was she vexed
This stage of life is harvest time
When fruit is at its best
When ripeness is all and so are we
So share that fruit with those around
Let loved ones taste and see
That life is good we’ve wealth to share
With our posterity
