‘When you go in there
It’s as if I don’t exist,’
The words that Margaret said to me one day
‘There’ was in my study
My office if you like
What Margaret said had given it a twist
It felt like accusation
I hurried to defend myself and said
‘It’s just like going to work.
You go out the door,
I start my day and go in there.’
But I misunderstood
I really missed the point
That I had work to do
Was no complaint
It was leaving her on her own so long
Margaret being ill
I wasn’t thinking
Just doing my will
Our human conversations
So like a tennis match
Reactions quick
Volley smash and point
When thoughtfulness is missing
We not only miss the point
We miss the person too
We might be kissing
