Do What You Do Do Well

Classics teacher Eton
In retirement
Translated Harry Potter
Into Latin
Using skills
He used his whole life long
Way to go
Keeps the person young

Margaret in her illness
Worked at cross stitch
Occupied her hands
And mind the while
Kept her in the swim of things
Though grounded
I see her work beside me
And I smile

Daddy in old age
Studied the horses
Racing page in hand
He knew the score
Analysing form
And course conditions
Afternoons he’d watch
On Channel Four

Now in my old age
I’m writing poems
Words just now
Are pouring out of me
Spent my life among them
In the pulpit
In preaching and in
Good consultancy

We do what we’ve been doing
It’s our nature
Practised skills
Why would you let them go?
They bring you joy
They bring you satisfaction
Keep on writing
Till it’s time to…..
