Ben Vorlich

Ben Vorlich
Prominent pyramid
Against a western sky
I saw you every day
When seventeen
A novice
In religious life
The outlook from Shea’s Fort
Your majesty
Demanded you were seen

Of life I then knew nothing
A seminary boy was I
The walls of holy houses all I knew
But you have seen
So many things
The rising of the clans
Rob Roy
A neighbour
Wordsworth a visitor
Too

An old military road
Runs close by in Strathyre
Taking soldiers north
Their work to do
Meeting out due punishment
To any who resist
The power of London
Making sure you knew

When I returned to Scotland
After many years away
And settled here in Stirling
With my crew
I saw your noble countenance
In northern skies this time
I smile to see you
O indeed I do

Old familiar faces
And old familiar places
Bring comfort and encouragement along
Good family is everything
Firm friends a constant too
Ben Vorlich –
You deserve a song
