A Song At Evening

I remember climbing
On my daddy’s knee
And asking him
To sing for me
He had a lovely voice
And I gave him no choice
You have to sing a song
Please sing for me

The coal fire
Was roaring in the grate
Evening time
And it was getting late
Soon I’d be
Up the dancers
Better take my chances
Daddy will you sing a song to me

I remember
How he could make me cry
Singing ‘upon
Another daddy’s knee’
Don’t now know the song
But it sounded all so wrong
Sing a happy song now
Just for me

And so he sang Al Jolson
To the air
Climb upon my knee
Sonny Boy
Little Man
You’ve had a busy day
And another song
To steal your heart away

I leave the moon above
To those in love
When I leave the world behind
My father’s voice resonant and fine
Time for bed!
Time to sleep sunshine!
