A Gift For Conversation

I have a friend called David
From my childhood
We both liked Elvis
When we went to school
We played cricket on the common
Bat and bowling
No ‘keeper so we ran round
Like a fool

We played racing cars together
Round the sofa
And subbuteo
David always won
I think he practised
When I wasn’t looking
Doesn’t matter
We had loads of fun

Came the day and I
Went off to college
Seminary life so far away
That’s when our life parted
Such a shame that
‘I lost you to the church’
I’d hear him say

When I left he called it
A no-brainer
Delighted then to have me
Back around
Wined and dined
De Vere Whites Hotel
Just like being back
On Tyldesley ground

David is a businessman
Of note
A people person
Expert talker too
Emails can be brief
He’s not a writer
But given a mike
He’s time’s thief and times two

As I was leaving the dinner
We had together
A word of wise advice
I got that day
‘Whatever happens,
Whatever comes between you,
Brian, always say
Always say!’
