The Art of Changing

Why should I pray?
What does it do?
– A funny question
Coming from you!
Maybe so
But still I ask
What good
Does any of our praying do?

You might as well ask
Why do I talk to you?
What good is gained?
Being with you
And talking over things we do
Would I be better sitting on my own!

We grow in friendship
Grow in grace
When you and I
Slacken off the pace
And make of our selves
Such pleasant company

We change the world
We sort it out
With thought and laughter
And with shout
Our talking and our listening
Make our world

So prayer
Is simply company
And presence and attention too
And gently easing down into the heart
And letting someone speak to you
And change your way of being you
And changing is a noble holy art
