Shannon Pot

The waters of the hills
Rise up at Shannon Pot
Hard rock below compels a rise
And a stream of Irish water
Begins its journey south
A stream maybe but wait for the surprise

It gathers strength in flowing
Soon entering a lake
Lough Allen there
And soon a Leitrim shore
And flowing then through Carrick
It gathers boats and crew
A tourist trade has gathered at its door

I remember Termonbarry
For I crossed the river there
Each time I motored westward to Mayo
The waters of the river impressive now and wide
Flow down into Lough Ree and by Athlone
Through quiet midland scenery
And old monastic sites
And Meelick the place at water side

And entering Lough Derg
The mighty waters flow
And wind there way to Limerick and the sea
Dividing Clare and Kerry
The mighty ocean roar
Meets river water by Kilbaha Bay

The rain that fell on Cavan hills
So many miles away
Is now a part of ocean thrills
Down Ballybunnion way
So join your life to lives around
Contribute to the scene
And life will grow and you will find
The ocean of your dream
