You Bet

Singing Grass it won at Haydock Park

The day my dad and uncle Pat were there

Came home a worthy winner worth remark

My father made a note of that good mare

And three years on the mare she has a foal

It’s running in the Derby ‘54

And Lester’s on his back the prize his goal

Never Say Die – need I say any more

And at the end of life when Daddy died

We found a racing slip his final bet

Fervent Hope the horse he fancied then

Did it win or is it running yet

These horses are so special in their way

Singing Grass points to a happy day

Never Say Die the spirit for the fight

And Fervent Hope the promise of delight

The world has changed the world is changing yet

And Cheltenham saw a lady win the prize

And Aintree and the National well would you credit it

The lovely Rachel Blackmore the surprise

My father followed his horses all his days

His mother and his aunt they liked a bet

When poverty is at the door you search out any ways

To make ends meet the gee-gees might help yet
