On seeing a photograph by P J Ruddy
Last night I saw the lake again
A glimpse as darkness fell
And seeing fell in love again
With a spot I know so well
The blanket bog the sky still bright
The setting sun ablaze
And a sliver of water in the night
That has haunted all my days
Glencullen side and Carrowmore
And Barnatra beyond
And Broadhaven’s wide majestic sweep
Further than sight or sound
The western sky the fleeting cloud
The still as darkness fell
Lifted my heart to cry out loud
O Erris! Your magic spell!
God bless the days I lingered there
God bless the friends I knew
My cousins one and all were there
And every one was true
Now we are scattered far and wide
Far from that Erris shore
God bless that dear Glencullen side
God bless you evermore
