The Taking of Christ (For Pauline)

You hang in Dublin town all this while

A buried treasure

Hiding in plain sight

Six figures in the dark

Gethsemane

Ill met by moonlight

Meagre lantern light

Judas’ earnest kiss

As he betrays

Guards rush on

John steals away

The lantern bearer

Painter all in one

Looks on in sorrow

Sad at this affray

All the while

The still and silent Lord

Closes his eyes against

This evil world

Deceit displayed

And violent rush of arms

Against a man

The subject of the palms

Duplicity and violence

Rule this world

And Christ came here

When Ireland was aflame

Whom do you seek?

The Lord forever asks

The Nazarene we say

Then here I am
